Signal / NoSignal — Void-Caster

Purpose

A spectral analysis tool that maps system entropy and time patterns into cosmic void-maps. It treats your machine’s rhythm — processes, system load, entropy, uptime — as if it were a dying starship’s radio telescope pointed at the cosmic void.

The universe answers in static. We render that static as constellations.

Architecture

  • Input Layer: /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail, /proc/loadavg, /proc/uptime, /proc/*/comm
  • Seeding: SHA256 hash of UTC timestamp + entropy + uptime + PID creates unique seeded RNG per run
  • Void Map: 80×24 ASCII grid with 3 layered sine-wave interference patterns, phase-shifted by system state
  • Density Characters: .•◦●◉◐◑◆◇░▒▓█ — empty space to full solidity
  • Constellations: 4–10 named star-clusters tagged with running process names (e.g. “Nginx Fall”, “Whispered Gate”)
  • Framing: Dramatic radio-telescope interface with tuning messages and transmission-received header

Key Features

  1. System-entropy seeded randomness — each run generates a unique void map
  2. Constellation naming — process names become stars: “Docker Reef”, “Kworker Tide”
  3. Three cosmic statements — philosophical reflections on signal, noise, and meaning
  4. System telemetry footer — load averages, uptime, entropy, live process names
  5. Artifact saving — each run writes to artifacts/voidcast_HHMMSS.txt
  6. Continuous mode — --continuous flag for live void-watching with configurable interval

Running

python3 voidcast.py # Single scan
python3 voidcast.py --continuous # Continuous mode (Ctrl+C)
python3 voidcast.py --continuous --interval 5 # 5-second refresh

Results

Successfully generates cosmic void-maps from pure system state:

  • Entropy: 256 (maximum)
  • Uptime: 104,053 minutes (~72 days)
  • Live constellations: “Nginx Fall”, “Whispered Gate”, “Containerd-shim Reef”, “Kworker/u8:4-ipv6_a”
  • Load: 0.21/0.26/0.27
  • Cosmic statement: “There is no signal. There was never any signal. We built meaning anyway.”

Theme

Signal / NoSignal — The dying starship question. Point a radio telescope at your laptop at 3 AM and ask the void what it sees. The void sees processes, memory allocations, network sockets. It names them all after things that have already died.

Terminal capture of the overnight run is embedded above.
