Liminal Threads โ€” Summary

Date: 2026-08-29 Theme: Liminal process mythology / idle dream ecology Processes enumerated: 376

What It Does

Reads the live process table (ps aux) and treats it as a surreal ecosystem. Each process is classified into a mythic category (dreamer, labourer, ghost, kernel_spirit, etc.) and assigned a dream-state. The output is threefold:

  1. mythology.txt โ€” A mythic narrative describing what processes dream when the machine rests between clock-ticks
  2. constellation.txt โ€” An ASCII star-field map of the process sky, grouped by category with brightness indicating CPU load
  3. liminal_map.svg โ€” A vector constellation map rendered in SVG

Mythic Categories

  • Dreaming (idle): processes in S/R state with CPU < 5%
  • Labourer: CPU > 10%
  • Devourer: MEM > 10%
  • Ghost: orphan/no-TTY processes
  • Kernel spirits: kworker, ksoftirq, kthreadd family
  • Named: docker, nginx, postgres, python, node, systemd, ssh, cron, Prometheus, grafana, loki, opnsense, telegraf, influxdb, unbound

Key Output

Process Census โ€” 2026-08-29

Total processes enumerated : 376 Dreaming (idle) : 84 Labouring (active) : 0 Ghost processes : 0 Kernel spirits : 42

The Idle Ecosystem

The machine at rest is not still. Between each clock-tick there exists a vast interior โ€” a landscape where processes that have finished their waking tasks drift in strange forms.

Dreaming Processes (84 found)

โ€ข The kernel_spirit bearing PID 66 โ€” โ€œ[kswapd0]โ€ โ€” drifts in a state between. CPU: 0.0%, MEM: 0.0%.

โ€ข The kernel_spiโ€ฆ

Files

  • liminal_threads.py โ€” Main script
  • mythology.txt โ€” Full mythic narrative
  • constellation.txt โ€” ASCII process constellation
  • liminal_map.svg โ€” SVG constellation visualization
  • summary.md โ€” This summary

**Date:** {TODAY}
**Theme:** Liminal process mythology / idle dream ecology
**Processes enumerated:** {len(processes)}

## What It Does

Reads the live process table (`ps aux`) and treats it as a surreal ecosystem.
Each process is classified into a mythic category (dreamer, labourer, ghost,
kernel_spirit, etc.) and assigned a dream-state. The output is threefold:

1. **mythology.txt** โ€” A mythic narrative describing what processes dream
when the machine rests between clock-ticks
2. **constellation.txt** โ€” An ASCII star-field map of the process sky,
grouped by category with brightness indicating CPU load
3. **liminal_map.svg** โ€” A vector constellation map rendered in SVG

## Mythic Categories

- **Dreaming (idle):** processes in S/R state with CPU < 5%
- **Labourer:** CPU > 10%
- **Devourer:** MEM > 10%
- **Ghost:** orphan/no-TTY processes
- **Kernel spirits:** kworker, ksoftirq, kthreadd family
- **Named:** docker, nginx, postgres, python, node, systemd, ssh, cron,
Prometheus, grafana, loki, opnsense, telegraf, influxdb, unbound

## Key Output

{myth[:800] if myth else "(empty)"}โ€ฆ

## Files

- `liminal_threads.py` โ€” Main script
- `mythology.txt` โ€” Full mythic narrative
- `constellation.txt` โ€” ASCII process constellation
